Everybody must get stoned…NOT!

It’s hard to believe that in the 21st Century, a woman could be  sentenced to be stoned to death for an offense as common as adultery, as Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old Iranian mother of two children, was in 2006. Thankfully, Iranian authorities aren’t carrying out the sentence for the time being. Yet Ashtiani could still face execution by hanging.

Does the punishment fit the crime here, is what any civilized person in any country, should be asking. Does Ashtiani, a widow, deserve to die for her indiscretion? Should her two children be left orphans due to an adulterous indiscretion?

It’s time for Iran to join the new millennium. Hopefully, the first step towards civility in Iran has been taken, with the postponment, or whatever it will become, of Ashtani’s stoning. But with the possibility of her execution still looming, it’s time for Iran to wake up and smell the coffee.

As Carlos Santana would sing, “You got to change your evil ways, baby.”  That is my suggestion to the Iranian powers that be.
