When in France, do as the French do..

The French Senate earlier this week overwhelmingly passed a bill banning the wearing of full Muslim veils in public, according to an Associated Press story.   The measure outlaws the face-covering veils in streets, including those worn by tourists.  It is said to be aimed at ensuring gender equality, women’s dignity and security, and upholding  France’s secular values — and its way of life.

Although I completely respect other religions and the right to express religious beliefs and traditions freely, I can’t help but agree with the French.  I say when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Or in this case, do as the French do.

Because for those of us raised in countries where a burqa is not an everyday occurence, the style can be a bit scary, especially since the September 11 World Trade Center attacks.  It’s weird not to be able to see someone’s face, and the burqa to me sends a message: I may be in your country, but I won’t adapt to your ways.

The French Muslim population, which is around 5 million, is the largest in western Europe, and some say they’re already  targeted by hate-mongers and that the ban “will officialize Islamophobia.”   I say take your veils off,  ladies, before that happens, and Muslims get French fried by haters.
